1) Heritage Open Days: a look at events attended and those taking place over the rest of the week
This led to a brief discussion of the name Hollis: Hollis Croft in the city centre and Hollis Hospital at Whirlow. The Hollis family who set up a Trust at the beginning of the 18th century which paid for a hospital near Snig Hill. In 1903 this was moved out into Whirlow, where the Hollis family also owned land.

HODs also led to discussion of the numerous sites of quarries in the Sandygate area
2) It was agreed that meetings would continue to take place at Broomhill Library; the library is hosting HOD events and developing an archive based on the Broomhill historian Eva Wilkinson; JP shared leaflets for self-guided walks connecting the library, the General Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens
3) KP shared ‘Nursery Notes Messr. William Artindale and Son.’ Article from The Garden, a gardening trade publication dated 6th December 1913 about Artindale’s Nursery in Nether Green – a large and thriving business with a national presence

4) GC told us about the 1939 Register
5) AC shared a 1913 walking guide called “Sheffield Telegraph” Rambles, written by the journalist Charles Chandler; a Porter Valley walk includes reference to metal steps leading up a slope which could be Jacob’s Ladder
6) GC showed us an album of old photographs of the Rivelin Valley which he has enhanced; discussion of tunnel which ran from Rivelin to Ladybower; this discussion from Sheffield History Chat site gives details; images from Jean Cass’ article, The Rivelin Tunnel, 1903-1910 in Transactions of the Hunter Archaeological Society, Vol. 18, 1995, pages 62,63 & 69
Mary Queen of Scots is said to have gone hawking at Rivelin Lodge when she was captive in Sheffield.
