Record of FULWOOD HISTORY GROUP MEETING 15th October 2026
Present: D.A., J.B., N.B., A.C., G.C., M.L., C.M., J.P., K.P.
- KP shared A History of Census Takers by Mish Holman (2026); discussed how censuses provide snapshots of localities e.g. variation of road names where Nether Green cottages sited and identity of enumerators such as Sam Danks, (Fulwood schoolmaster), and a local gardener
- ML: possible Roman Road in Hallam Moor/Stanage Moor area
- AC told us about two tragic incidents of the 1930s with connections to Tapton Hall; Alan’s full account is here
- The location of a possible quern in a dry-stone wall near School Green Lane was discussed; there is a suggestion that the wall dates back to Roman British time because of the large orthostats, (large stone blocks), in its base; information about this to be found here in Alan’s Substack article

- ML passed round a piece of pottery found during an archaeological dig at Whirlow; possibly ancient – Roman or Medieval
- NB shared photos connected to his home; probably taken early 20th century and including pictures of a gamekeeper; he had located specific stones in the wall in the background which enabled him to pinpoint where the pictures had been taken
- JB shared photos taken that day of a stone roller, (like the one located at the top of Woodcliffe/Whiteley Wood Green), used as a gatepost on Lodge Moor Road
