Private Horace George Denby was born in 1898 in Besthorpe (Nottinghamshire) and in 1901 was staying with his mother’s parents on their farm at Bentley with Arksey, Doncaster.

By 1911 the family, which included Horace’s younger brother Reginald, had moved to Sheffield and were living at 96 Hangingwater Road. Joseph William was recorded as a fruiterer and the address on the census shows this was the first shop on the north side of the road (it is now the offices of RGS Cleaning). So the family was living above the shop.

Horace joined the Derbyshire Yeomanry, a battalion of the Household Cavalry which was part of the British Salonika Army. Between 1915 and 1918, British troops were part of a multi-national allied force fighting against the Bulgarians and their allies in the Balkans.

He died on the 12 June 1918 and is buried at Struma Military Cemetery at Salonika in Greece. He is commemorated at Fulwood.
