2nd Lieutenant Thomas Percy Burwell

Thomas Percy was one of five children of Thomas Francis and Mary.

The history of the Burwell family is here

When war broke out Thomas Percy joined the York and Lancaster Regiment. His service record has not been found but we know he joined as a private. This is because the probate for his father’s estate recorded that Thomas Percy was one of the executors and his rank was included. However, in July 1917 he was ‘gazetted’ as a 2nd Lieutenant.

After the war, Thomas Percy resumed his career with the Government. He married Dorothy Hoare in London in 1920 and in 1939 they were living in Tingewick in Buckinghamshire at the Latin School. Thomas had retired possibly to look after Dorothy who was by now an invalid. Care for Dorothy was also provided by Freda Thomas who was described as a companion and housekeeper. It may be that Thomas Percy had some teaching or administrative duties at the school but preferred to be known as being retired.

Thomas Percy died in Oxford in 1975.
