Private Robert Chadwick Bowling

The son of John Walter and Elizabeth Bowling. Robert was born in the early part of 1898 and was one of eight surviving children. On both censuses (1901 and 1911) , the family was living at 45 Ranmoor Road.

Robert joined up early and was in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry before transferring to the 11th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers.

He was killed in action and is buried at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) near Ypres. The headstone has the inscription: “He Fought The Good Fight”

His name also appears on the memorials at Ranmoor and is remembered on his parents’ grave at Fulwood:
